With local council searches taking so long, can I still be sold by Christmas?

Yes you can, but it can depend on your buyer and your agent being prepared to think a little unconventionally.
There are alternatives to local authority searches to get the whole sales process moving faster.
Most buyers require local authority searches and these are currently taking a long time to come back in Weymouth and Portland. But a personal search or an indemnity for searches (a type of insurance policy) can speed things up and it may be that your agent needs to see if these choices are suitable for your buyer. It can come down to the mortgage company, and even the buyers' solicitor, being prepared to accept an alternative to the traditional local authority searches.
As a seller, you can take some steps to minimise the time a sale will take to complete.  Top of your list should be to instruct your solicitor right at the start of marketing, not wait until you have found a buyer.  You can get all of the initial paperwork out of the way whilst there is not pressure and your solicitor can be ready to issue a draft contract the moment your estate agent provides them with a memorandum of sale.
The alternatives will not suit all buyers' circumstances, but it is worth getting your agent to at least ask the question "what can be done to speed the sale up?"
